A Pittsburgh defense attorney who brought a gun into the Allegheny County Courthouse on Tuesday will be charged with a third-degree misdemeanor.

Komron Jon Maknoon, 47, owner of Maknoon & Associates, will be charged with carrying a firearm in a court facility after guards working the metal detectors discovered he had a 9 mm Springfield XD loaded with 10 rounds in the outer pocket of his messenger bag, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Allegheny County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Kevin Kraus told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Maknoon failed to declare he had a loaded gun with him, but “he was very cooperative.”

“I, more so than many, should understand the danger a firearm presents in the community,” Maknoon told the newspaper. “I take my responsibility as a gun owner who chooses to carry for protection very seriously, as well as the laws that govern this right.”

Maknoon said he became preoccupied with his business at the courthouse and forgot about the gun in his bag.
Kraus said it is the sheriff’s office’s standard policy to file a charge of possession of a firearm in a court facility in any instance in which no weapon is declared. The sheriff’s office took possession of the gun but said he could petition the court to have it returned to him. Maknoon said the charge won’t affect his law practice.
